I believe Professor Tooze is becoming one of the most influential economic voices on the global scene. He does not just provide opinions on world issues, but instead he presents his thoughts based upon history and the best data that he can find.
His best works, The Deluge and Crashed, are already "must-reads" for any student or scholar who seeks to see and understand the bigger picture about global economics -- whether it be about today, or after World War I concerning Germany and Europe.
I thoroughly enjoy reading his provocative articles, his deeply researched and informative books, and his excellent sub-stack work. His work is edgy, sharp and boldly presented.
Professor Tooze, remember, write for the people and the world at-large, and not for any awards, or affirmation, or glorification given from the economic establishment! It's not worth it!!
Remember, Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer never won the Nobel Prize for Science, but they changed the world more fundamentally than all the Nobel winners put together. Remember that. Professor Tooze, stay true to your inner voice - you will never regret it!!
I do not have the platform or credibility (I am not an economist) on such a topic. But, the weekly unemployment numbers provided every Thursday are simply false and terribly misleading.
Professor Tooze could you write an Op-Ed or something on your sub-stack page about this topic?
Today, CNBC published an article, written by Jeff Cox, announcing that 730,000 American applied for State Unemployment benefits. Of course, these are Great Depression-type numbers.
Yet, Cox makes it sound like unemployment has dropped "sharply". However, this extraordinarily high level of National Unemployment has existed for a calendar year - so far. Unbelievable!
The current unemployment situation is much worse - statistically - than in 2008-2009!
Problem: The corporate media NEVER reports those who apply for benefits through the Pandemic Unemployment Aid (PUA) program.
Last week, from 13 Feb thru 20 Feb, approximately 964,000 applied for PUA benefits.
Altogether, 1.694 million Americans have applied for either State Unemployment assistance or PUA benefits.
I am not a MIT graduate, but that is a hell of a lot of unemployed people!
Mark Twain once stated when asked about the importance of government statistics, "there are Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics".
I feel Twain's acute observation is rather appropriate for describing the current unemployment crisis in America.
Professor, how can we fix a 'crisis' situation in America if we can not be honest about its true dimensions?
Professor Tooze: Since you can not travel throughout America to speak to live audiences - yet - where do I send a couple of books to be signed? Finally, yes, Einstein did win a Nobel Prize in 1921. Actually, I did not know that. Funny, of all the documentaries about his life. I do not believe I ever heard him mentioned as a Nobel recipient. I guess I just didn't hear that. Yet, he published (4) scientific papers in 1905 - that revolutionized his field of study. But, he did not win a Nobel until 1921. Hmmmmm. Interesting.
It is, however, factually incorrect that Albert Einstein did not win a Nobel Prize for a scientific discipline: hew won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Do you think that there is a chance for the rescue package recently approved in the US to end up causing higher-than-desirable inflation and, as a result, money continues to flow into the EU?

Professor Tooze, thank you for your time.

Great piece, as always.
