I see Marianna Mazzucatto wasn't a signatory of the text.

And the herds of elephants is also not mentioned: the War on Terror unleashed by the US, which opened the flood gates of millions of immigrants in the EU, the War in Ukraine fostered by the US, whch also created millions of refugees, the hypocritical support for genocide in Gaza, the cutting of EU from the reliable and chep energy and resources from Russia.

With statements and paradigms like this group's, no wonder "those" people are upset and want something else, other than what is already on the menu.

Well, I certainly hope so, we need to get off fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Sorry it took a war to do it, though.

The transition to greener sources of energy, until that happens, will require more fossil fuel, not less. Pluss the fact that the developing world also wants some material improvements in their lives...

Just imagine what it would mean for Africa to have their electricity generated by the sun instead of by imported fossil fuels.

That would mean they will have to first buy it or produce it locally. So you will need a lot of fossil energy to produce all those solar panels, eh?

I don't know, what do solar-panel factories run on? We're not smelting iron here.

not only iron, but glass and silicon as well: https://www.solarreviews.com/blog/how-are-solar-panels-made

This article is the one that encouraged me to pay for a subscription. The Berlin Summit provides hope in the looming struggle to contain climate change damage. Kim Stanely Robinson's The Ministry of the Future comes to mind in reading the declaration. One suggestion: consider the literary and artistic global community as essential allies in paving the cultural road of necessary for change.

"Liberal democracies are today confronted with a wave of popular distrust" which could lead to "dangerous populist policies". Winning back this distrust includes building better industrial policies, design a healthier globalization, redesign climate policies, yada yada. Good grief. We, the people/populist/deplorables were told that the Steele documents proved that Trump was a Russian agent, that Hunter's laptop was Russian disinformation, that covid originated naturally , open borders are good for us, boys and girls are interchangeable, that the vaccine was effective, safe and mandatory, Russia blew up its own pipeline, the war in Ukraine was unprovoked . . . If one questioned any of this nonsense you were spreading mis-, mal-, disinformation. Of course these "intellectuals" know all of this, which might possibly have created mistrust in govt,, but if they said so they wouldn't be invited to next week's bash.

When people disagree with you and tell you you're wrong, does that make you angry, Dan?

All very well but consider that private savings are doubling more than twice as fast as GDP in the US. Private savings are the difference between what fiat governments spend into the economy and what they tax back. It is a profound failure of tax policy. Wealth is being accumulated not by private enterprise but by tax avoidance. Government bonds are, essentially, saved tax credits. They should be confiscated.

Mr Adam Tooze, I love your articles. I read them with a fraternal and co-eternal love. I feel love for you in a brotherly like way. Why do you yell at me that I, who want to provide cheap legal service for the poor, have to accept the Warsaw government policy of keeping the wages of barristers in obligatory servitude? Why has the minimum wage increased from 400 zł to 4300 zł, yet my wages have been set by the government at the same rate as in 1998? Is that what the EU wants? Cause this poverty has driven me to destitution and Schumepterian economics. I truly regard the Jewish peddler selling eggs and Sabbath methanol at the store as my brother. I am PiS in Kielce. Also I love your writing, just thinking that I had an Englishman haggle me out buying a red bra for my woman, whose father is distraught thinking that he has to provide a dowry for me, afraid that I'll destroy him financial, as your heroes call me an idiot. Yes, I live a rich and happy life for 200 GBP a month, yet you tell me that we are populist bastards? You Englishmen are extortionate bastards, who give the opportunity will suck me dry. Can you imagine a barrister with 10 years in London get 20 h * (you're a bastard, you dirty capitalist) from someone who was condemned for fraud, who gets 1200 GBP per month and loves to lord his atheism and English nationalist religion... You sicken me! You! You people are all hypocrites. My bishop has never condemned me for my anarchism - you have! You are despicable. Now one has condemned me for antisemitism, I worked for many Jews - yet you pontificate on me! So, an anarchist Jewish-hugger raggamaffin in a white linen suit made by his cousin is a bastard according to you, because he paid 30 zł for it, but in London it would 5000 GBP.... WE WANT INDUSTRY NOT HANDOUTS FROM THE EU!
