Indonesian expressionism
Very into the genre of Indonesian expressionism which I stumbled across via Art Forum and a show organized by the Hyphen group, which showcased the work of Kustiyah (1935–2012), who became a key figure in Indonesia’s postindependence art scene as a member of the Yogyakarta Artists’ Wives Association.
As Hyphen report:
This photo from September 1956 from the SIASAT magazine shows: “ASRI student Kustiyah painting the landscape of a beach in Tegal. Another angle of this scenery can be seen in Kustiyah’s family archive, where you’ll see her wearing a bamboo-weaved head cover, typically worn by farmers or fishermen.”

356 days that shook the world
Going back over my website, Adamtooze.com, I came across this piece I did in 2017 for Prospect magazine on the centennial anniversary of the Russian Revolution. under the sign of Donald Trump’s election.
“1917 opened a trapdoor to the future, less because of the Russian Revolution than because the US seized its chance to lead.”
