Fantastically wide-ranging discussion, much to chew on about Keynes, Mann, Hegel, Marx, Malthus and all that swirling vortex of thought on society and politics.

I almost feel that this is wasted on Substack and hope for a Tooze volume on "Keynes and his precedents" and "the liberal order of the 20th century and its discontents"

Great piece. Really appreciate it.

If Keynesian liberalism was a kind of self-revolution—absorbing planning, state capacity, and modern macroeconomic governance in order to rescue bourgeois civilization—then today’s Western democratic capitalism may need another one.

The task now is to rebuild state capacity, rebalance fairness and efficiency, and restore a workable equilibrium among the state, capital, and civil society. The postwar settlement succeeded precisely because democratic capitalism proved capable of adapting its institutions to a new social and economic reality. The question today is whether it can do so again.
